Who are We?

Literacy Volunteers of America/ Midyork (LVA) is a regional, nonprofit educational organization operated by professionals which delivers tutoring services through a network of more then 100 volunteer tutors in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison Counties. Because of our extremely cost effective, system,we are able to provide goal-oriented tutoring and one on one tutoring at no cost to the student.

What do we do?

LVA/Midyork provides materials and services to develop volunteer programs in Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language. Through our effort more then 100 volunteers work with more the 150 adult learners in our region.

Why is LVA's work so important?

The ability to read write and speak English is basic to living a full and free life in America. Adult literacy students gain independence as they are able to become full participants in society as informed, contributing citizens. The full development of each individual's potential goes hand in hand with strengthening our nation. As service organizations become more important in our region, the need for literate adults becomes greater.

                                  How Our Program Works

  • Intake interview and confindential assessment of each learner.
  • Identification of the learners personal goals.
  • Learner is "matched" with an appropriate tutor.
  • Learner is provided with one-on-one tutoring
  • Learner is re-tested and assessed on a regular basis
